The Integrated Exhaust Hull Structure, IEHS,
an underwater exhaust system was invented by George Vonwidmann.
A ship's Master and yacht designer for over 30 years, George
has been refining this system for the past 15 years. It
has in recent years, become the newest standard for exhaust
systems throughout the marine industry.
This unique underwater exhaust system utilizes an "exhaust
thrust slot", incorporating an even more unique
"wedge". This exhaust slot and wedge, located
at the trailing edge of the transom, where the maximum hull
pressures are generated, literally pull exhaust from the
system. As the exhaust meets the exhaust thrust slot, it
encounters a powerful vacuum created by the wedge at the
leading edge of the slot, pulling the exhaust and greatly
reducing backpressure. At the same moment this exhaust
is pulled out of the engines it is pulled underwater, along
with it the noise, the soot and the steam. At startup and
while at idle, the exhaust and raw water exit the hull via
a lowspeed
bypass. This bypass pipe is located just above the waterline
on the side of the hull at the transom and disperses the
exhaust away form the vessel until the vessel is in gear
when the vacuum wedge and under water exit slot take over..
The IEHS is installable as a stringer system built into
the stringers inide the engine roon, running aft or as an
aft
chamber system.
Each IEHS is custom designed and custom installed.
To any boat builder, each of his boats are a labor of love.
Each one is a work of art. We feel the same way about the
IEHS. In 15 years of designing exhaust systems, few
if any have been the same from boat to boat. Each is unique
and just as much a work of art to us as the vessel it serves.
Since the early 20th century, the marine exhaust industry
has been plagued by traditional thinking. The IEHS
has broken the barriers of convention. No longer
must one tolerate high backpressure. The IEHS relieves
backpressure to as low as zero.
No longer must one tolerate steamy, smoky
exhaust. The IEHS removes up to 80% of exhaust
particulate. No longer must one tolerate deafeningly
loud exhaust. The IEHS quiets exhaust noise down
to less than 82dB. The
IEHS requires much less space for installation than
any traditional pipe system. We have been able to carry
bigger fuel tanks, up to an additional 400 gallons
in many cases. In addirion, for the first time in boat building
history, this exhaust system is actually used to improve
hull and fuel efficiency by useing exhaust "thrust"
to create hull lift and and at the same time create forward
moving energy. Clients are experiencing improved time to
plane, up to 20% faster. The IEHS is able
to handle larger amounts of raw cooling water. As much as
100 gpm more over conventional round pipe exhausts.
This results in an almost complete elimination of steam
which means operating temperatures as low as low as 96 degrees
Fahrenheit inside the IEHS duct.
We guarantee: Your boat will not only meet but exceed
any engine companys' backpressure requirements. We guarantee:
Significant space savings, up to
60% over conventional round exhaust systems.
We guarantee: A quieter cleaner exhaust than you
ever thought possible. We guarantee: We will work
with the builder, hand-in-hand to meet his individual needs
and to develop and impliment solutions in as timely a manner
as possible. However, these guarantees must go hand-in-hand
with the understanding that we rely on the builders' judgment
and understanding of his vessels if the builder guarantees
he will rely on ours. Click
here for information about the design process.
The IEHS is proud to call home, some of the most
prestigious luxury and sportfishing yachts on earth and
we vow to work diligently to uphold a reputation that will
one day be looked upon by history as an important element
in the evolution of marine exhaust.
At VonWidmann Designs LLC, we continue to
work with our clients to ensure that each and every one
of their quailty yachts leaves the yard with the best exhaust
system possible.
